On the agenda were 283 lectures given by 126 professionals of 13 nationalities
The 34th World Congress WSAVA,
the World Small Animal Veterinarians Association Congress, which was held in Brazil for the first time from the 21st to the 24th of July at the Transamerica Hotel in São Paulo, showcased the most up-to-date discoveries and research related to veterinary techniques and treatments. The agenda included 126 speakers with 13 different nationalities that are among the biggest names in the world in Veterinary Medicine, such as Theresa Fossum, Simon Platt, Urs Giger, David Biller, David Church, Helio Autrain de Morais and Ross Palmer.
Among the topics discussed were Oncology, Hereditary diseases and Genetics, Surgery, animal Well-being, Reproduction, Dermatology, Dentistry, Neurology and Endocrinology. Around 3.6 thousand professionals from 55 countries gathered during the four-day event to listen to the presentations. The majority were made up of Brazilians, which represented 3.1 thousand of the participants. 45 participants represented the United States. Even visitors from countries the furthest from Brazil, like Afghanistan, Australia, India, Iran, Russia and New Zealand were present.
David Wadsworth, world WSAVA President, confirmed: “We didn’t have any concrete information on the quantity and quality of Brazilian veterinary doctors. It’s surprising that other countries also don’t know this fact. Events like this carry this type of message to the world and stimulate sector growth and improvement”.
According to Dr. Zohair Saliem Sayegh, President of WSAVA 2009 Brazil, “The congress is held every year, one year in Europe and the next, on another continent. To hold this event in Brazil and provide local professionals the chance to absorb the knowledge shared by the biggest names and to learn about the biggest Veterinary Medicine discoveries is, without a doubt, a great honor and a reflection of the potential that Brazil has to develop itself more and more as the specialist of the sector”.
The Congress agenda also included various social events. Around 1.2 thousand people participated at the opening ceremony, which was held at the Alfa Theater on the first day of the event. The event was the stage for presenting international awards in the Veterinary Medicine area and included MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), Bossa Nova and Samba groups.
On the night of July 22nd, participants enjoyed a gala dinner for 600 guests at the Hyatt Hotel and prepared themselves for the big Brazilian Party, held by HSBC Brazil on the 23rd of July. More than 3 thousand people participated in the event and were whipped into a frenzy by the samba club Mocidade Alegre. At the closing ceremony, a Swiss choral group enchanted everyone with typical music from their country, which will host the 35th edition of WSAVA in August 2010.
Pet South America 2009
Parallel to the Congress, from the 22nd to 24th of July, the 8th edition of Pet South America was held. The event received more than 26 thousand visitors from 43 countries, which recorded 30% growth from the previous year. There were 260 brands on exhibition that showcased new products, services and trends in animal health, food, beauty and accessories, as well as specific technologies in pet treatment and equipment.
